Charlene Petersen built this house with her husband and two children in mind. The house was named “Rustic Zen,” after the feeling evoked by the interior: warm and calming, yet organic and raw, inviting guests to come in and immediately be at ease and comfortable.
The vision and challenge was to create a bright, white, Scandinavian-inspired design with lots of depth and texture using minimal color: whites, beiges, greys and blacks. Charlene constantly plays with patterns and scale, such as incorporating stripes with ethnic prints, or plaids with antique textiles, always choosing fabrics that are soft and inviting.
The house was built to welcome extended family and lots of friends with six bedrooms, six full bathrooms and two powder rooms. It is ski in/ski out to the slopes of the exclusive Yellowstone Club in Montana with a breathtaking view of Loan Peak, the main mountain of Big Sky Resort.
The custom Madeline Weinrib rug provides an inviting foundation for the Club Cu Dining Table and the Eames Chairs by Design Within Reach.
Below right is a huge window seat in the Great Room, featuring Osborne and Little plaid fabric, perfect for naps, reading, games and conversation.
An antique bookcase is cleverly perched above a unique storage space for firewood.
The dramatic Great Room features layers of texture from the sleek and ultra-comfy upholstery by Verellen, three statement chandeliers by Kelly Wearstler, to a Gregorius Pineo console table.
The Children’s room brings the forest inside with wallpaper by Cole & Sons and Sparrow Cribs by Oeuf. Canopied overhead is a custom teepee by Rusty Nail Design in Bozeman.
Perfect for visitors, the Bunkroom below features four queen size beds and a sitting area.
