In recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, soprano Karen Slack is to perform Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915. The concert opens with Adolphus Hailstork’s Fanfare on Amazing Grace, and continues with Walker’s Lyric for Strings. A lifelong advocate for civil rights, Leonard Bernstein’s jazzy ballet score Fancy Free brings this celebratory concert to a close.

The first of six Free Entrance Days to the National Parks will take place on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. All National Park Service sites that charge an entrance fee will offer free admission to everyone (other fees, including timed entry or reservation fees, may apply). The other five Free Entrance Days are scheduled to take place in April, June, August, September, and November.
