COASTAL CONTEMPORARY

COASTAL CONTEMPORARY

This Balboa Island Beach vacation home, in Newport Beach, California, required a gut renovation. Designer Jeff Trotter wanted to create a timeless yet transitional home that was effortlessly chic and sophisticated, while still being livable and inviting. He selected rich, espresso-stained, hand-distressed oak hardwood flooring, and designed custom bead-board picture frame paneling with tongue and groove on the ceilings. Jeff painted it bright white, to give the home a contemporary coastal aesthetic that would withstand the test of time. Employing a neutral palette of white, navy blue, grey, and beige keeps the space bright, light, and fresh. Jeff said, “I regularly gravitate towards refined and tonal palettes that invoke a visual sense of calm, but also find it important to include high contrast color pops of black for depth and interest. Texture is always a priority for me when designing spaces as well. I love contrasting textures that are pleasing to both the eye and to the touch. In this project, mixing varying textures, like linen, jute, denim, leather, cashmere, velvet, marble, wood, and iron, was an opportunity for me to create real dimension within each room, without feeling chaotic or overwhelming to the eye.”

“I wanted to keep the kitchen quite clean and simple since it’s open to the living and dining areas,” comments Jeff. He chose classic shaker cabinetry, finished in the same white as the wall and ceiling paneling. Honed Carrara marble was used for the backsplash and countertops, and for fun, a contrasting grey island. “This house is all about effortless and elevated beach living for a family that loves to really take advantage of everything Newport Beach has to offer and I think the home I designed really reflects that.”
