SHAKEN NOT STIRRED
Popular TV shows like Mad Men and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, depicting the American lifestyle in the mid twentieth century, remind us what it was like to live in an era where cigarette smoking, drinking, and feminism were all prevalent parts of everyday life. We often look back on that time and fondly appreciate the freedom to pour ourselves a drink mid-day at the office or light up a cigarette indoors without the scolding eyes of others. Today, many of my clients desire a place of their own that provides an escape—a space where they can surround themselves in the glamour and excess of 1960s American society.
For this swanky home lounge, I immediately fell in love with the client’s black and white print of Roger Moore as James Bond…with cigarette and drink in hand. Other than this print and the bar cabinetry, the room was a blank slate.
Metal, glass, and velvet mix together to give this room its opulent feel. For seating, a couch and armchair offer an elegant arrangement—both are upholstered in a soft gray velvet with a plinth base in brushed brass. A glass and Lucite coffee table adds additional interest without being too visually massive. The barstools are a favorite element—they are clad in polished brass with an upholstered seat (lightening the weightiness of the bar), which helps bring balance to the rest of the space. Plus, they are ultra-stylish! The countertop and back wall of the bar are finished with an onyx slab and backlit with LED lighting, drawing the eye up and adding drama to the space.
