PAR FOR THE COURSE

PAR FOR THE COURSE

What originated from a game of using a bent stick to hit a pebble over sand dunes and around tracks has evolved into the tenth most popular sport in the world. It’s widely accepted that early golf first took form on the eastern coast of Scotland in an area near the royal capital of Edinburgh during the 15th century. From the start, it was an infectious pastime—stories of soldiers neglecting military training in pursuit of golf led the Scottish parliament under King James II to ban the sport in 1457, though this was to no avail. King James IV became the world’s first golfing monarch and his endorsement lead to its rapid spread across 16th-century Europe. King Charles I brought the game to England while Mary Queen of Scots did the same in France during her time there—the term “caddie” is actually derived from “cadets”, the name of her French military aides. Golf expanded along with the might of the British Empire though the 19th century, especially with society’s elite. Yet the Industrial Revolution is largely why golf is so popular today—railroads allowed ordinary people to explore beyond the confines of their hometowns for the first time, and, consequently, golf clubs began popping up around the country and new mass production methods made manufacturing clubs and balls affordable for the average person. Today, it’s the sport that can be played anywhere, by anyone, during any time of the year. Here’s a round-up of some of the Central Valley’s favorite places to play golf.
