LB Tell us about the general process of how you approach each cosmetic dentistry case uniquely.

SN My first approach is to listen attentively to what my patients want. I listen to their concerns about the look of their teeth, for example, what they do not like and what they want me to improve. I will acknowledge them by retelling what I heard from them. Each case starts with a complete photography of the patient’s teeth. I review the pictures with them to tell them what I see and what can be improved. I always try to give them alternative treatments that they can choose from. Cosmetic dentistry is mainly involved in the appearance of teeth and enhancement of smile. The emphasis is on the art of dentistry along with the science.

LB What specific factors are taken into consideration when approaching a new cosmetic dentistry case?

SN Primarily, the most important factor is to take note of the main concern or chief complaint of the patient. Secondly, I need to determine the priority of the treatment plan stages, or in other words, I have to determine what should come first in the treatment plan. Some treatment plans are interdisciplinary. The CT scan needs to be reviewed and the case must be discussed with other dental specialists. Then, the best treatment plan is produced. While cosmetic dentistry requires a good eye, understanding thorough dental anatomy, having a mastery of dental material and techniques, and communication with a lab technician are integral keys to produce a smile makeover.

LB How do you then personally tailor individual smiles to fit every client?

SN Cosmetic dentistry is an art, just like painting or sculpture. I need to see and know the end result before any work is started. After collecting all the dental records (such as x-rays, digital scans, photos, and impressions), a wax-up model is designed and produced based on the facial structure, lip positions, and smile line. The wax-up model is used as a blueprint to make the provisional models.

LB What methods and practices do you employ to push yourself to be better for your patients every day?

SN I feel obligated to keep myself updated and educated in new techniques and employ state-of-the-art technologies and advanced dental equipment for my patients.

LB How do you remain so passionate about your work?

SN I love dentistry. Every day is a new opportunity for me to understand my patients’ concerns and needs by talking with them and visualizing the outcome. Each patient gives me a chance to help create a new smile. A new smile is a life-changing gift to a patient. The smile of my patients and their happiness motivates me to improve their life.

LB Share about how cosmetic dentistry fulfills you on both a personal and professional level.
SN Cosmetic dentistry has helped me listen better, pay more attention to my patients, be more sensitive to what my patient likes or dislikes, and gives me a better understanding of how I can enhance the total health of my community. It makes a better smile for the patient and a better me as a healthcare provider and gives me more strength to keep up with the high level needed for dental skills.
