As a neurosurgeon specializing in minimally invasive and complex spine surgeries, I’ve studied and practiced across the country. I recently came to Community Health System as the Medical Director of Neurosciences to help build something special here in the Valley – the Bob Smittcamp Family Neuroscience Institute. Too often, people in the Valley think they need to travel to the Bay Area or LA for expert care. We’re going to change that.

MY STORY
As the son of an Army Brigadier General, I grew up near Washington DC. I attended the Univisities of Virginia and Louisville for medical training and completed my residency in neurological surgery at Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital. My training and desire to advance neurosciences ultimately brought me to California and to Fresno of all places. There’s a real opportunity here ... a real need.
THE STORY BEHIND OUR NAME
In 2018, Bob Smittcamp made a transformational gift of $11 million. The noted businessman and philanthropist knew that the Central Valley needed more neuroscience services for patients. We’re working to build a comprehensive neuroscience center in his honor.
NEW SERVICES WE ARE EXCITED TO OFFER
Community already provides the majority of neuroscience services in the Central Valley, but residents need access to more. When completed, the Bob Smittcamp Family Neuroscience Institute will massively enhance the number of physicians and services available to local patients.
